Pediatrics

Gene expression profiling in vanishing white matter (VWM)

Your work environment
The department of Pediatrics at the VUmc holds an internationally renowned research line headed by professor Marjo van der Knaap, which studies genetic white matter brain diseases with childhood onset. The research team of Prof. Marjo van der Knaap is composed of childneurologists, cell biologists and molecular biologists and is supported by experienced research assistants. The research focuses on the neuropathology of several white matter diseases with a multidisciplinary approach, investigating brainscans, clinical symptoms, genetic defects, molecular and cellular pathophysiology. The group is part of the Neuroscience Campus Amsterdam and for this PhD project we will collaborate with the group of Prof Dr C. Proud (University of Southampton, United Kingdom).

Your job
The PhD project aims to unravel the disease mechanism of vanishing white matter (VWM). As PhD student you will be involved in mapping differential gene expression in normal and VWM tissue. In the second part of the project promising genes will be selected from this screen and further assessed for a causative role in VWM.

Techniques
RNA isolation, polysomal profiling, pulsed SILAC

Your experience and qualifications
We are looking for a (medical/molecular) biologist with a keen interest in gene expression and neuroscience. Experience with RNA isolation is an advantage.

What do we offer
Salaryscale OIO: 2107 tot 2700 euro gross in full-time employment depending on qualifications and experience).
