Core Competences
Scientific knowledge
The Neuroscience Campus Amsterdam has fundamental knowledge about the general understanding of human brain pathways on molecular and clinical level. This knowledge is driven by the present expertise of the scientific researchers and clinicians. The multidisciplinary approach of the institute further contributes to the scientific excellence.
Key Opinion Leaders
The institute houses several national and international recognised KOL’s within the scientific community. These KOL’s have an extensive scientific track record and multiple publications in a large number of internationally well-reputed journals. The presence of the KOL’s at the Neuroscience Campus Amsterdam assures scientific excellence through their respective research groups and facilities, research funding and, moreover, access to several commercial partners.
Patient cohorts
Neuroscience Campus Amsterdam has access to large and extensive patient cohorts of VUmc and VU. The patient cohorts are a strong asset due to the location in a metropolitan area with a high population density, several surrounding hospitals and clinics which refer patients to the VU centres, and existing infrastructure. This facilitates the broad range of disease topics covered within the patient cohorts and provides a control subpopulation, vital for optimisation of research results.
Infrastructure and facilities
The close proximity of universities, hospitals and clinics within a metropolitan city ensures a solid infrastructure for research and patient care. The facilities, laboratories and equipment of VUmc and VU are state-of-the-art and certified.
Biobanks
Based on the patient cohorts, infrastructure and facilities, multiple renowned biobanks are present with a wide variety of biological samples. Due to a unique combination of pathology expertise, comprehensive phenotyping and information storage, these biobanks are regarded as unique world wide. In addition, the infrastructure ensures a rapid succession of needed actions and thereby preserving the quality of the biological samples. The biobanks of the Neuroscience Campus Amsterdam has access to are, among other: Twin-Register, NESDA/NESDO, Netherlands Brain Bank, AD and MS patients (via Parelsnoer).
