MS Center Amsterdam - Clinical approach
The MS Center Amsterdam is a multidisciplinary centre in which more than 60 researchers of different disciplines cooperate in answering questions regarding the cause and cure of MS. The centre’s combination of fundamental and clinical research allows us to quickly apply new research developments in diagnostics and treatment of MS. In addition, questions which arise can be answered in cooperation with fundamental scientists. The MS Center Amsterdam is unique because it unites several disciplines in the field of MS.
- The department of neurology is specialized in MS and therefore attracts people from all over the Netherlands for consultation and/or treatment.
- In 1990 the department of radiology was the first in the Netherlands to make MRI scans of the brains of people with MS and has since then specialized in this field. The department has developed criteria for assessing MS scans which are applied worldwide.
- The department of neuropathology conducts research into what biological processes are involved in the formation of lesions by examining post-mortem MS brain tissue. Our collaboration with the Netherlands Brain Bank of the Netherlands Institute for Neurosciences is very important in this respect.
- The department of molecular cell biology and immunology uses models which mimic the process of the disease to unravel the mystery of MS, and to find pathogenic mechanisms, with a focus on the role of neuroinflammation and the blood brain barrier.
In addition to these four departments the VUmc also has other departments involved in research into MS or in treatment of people with MS. The activities on public relations, communications, office management and project management are performed from the MS Center Amsterdam Office.
