Patient-oriented scientific research
We focus on the biological mechanisms underlying common mental health and neurological brain diseases, applying the latest technology and thereby providing new perspectives on therapy. Finding the 'cause' of brain diseases, design its 'cure' and implement this to the level of 'patient care' are all in the center of our research ambition. All research in the 'brain disease mechanisms' programs is aimed and integrated with our major in-house patient clinics, including the Alzheimer Center, the MS Center, the Center for children with White Matter Disorders and the GGZBA-clinic affiliated patient research-programs for Anxiety and Depression disorders (NESDA) of the GGZBA-clinic.
Presently, Alzheimer's Disease is no longer thought to be one disease but a complex, multifactorial and multigenic, disease. Our research has focused on unraveling several factors in order to enable early diagnosis, treatment and ultimately prevention.
The Netherlands Study of Depression and Anxiety (NESDA) was designed to investigate the course of depression and anxiety disorders over a period of eight years. The main aim of NESDA is to determine the factors that influence the development and the long-term prognosis of anxiety and depression.
The MS research at the VUmc is assembled in the multidisciplinary MS Center Amsterdam. The centre has three important roles: research into multiple sclerosis (MS), care for people with MS and education of MS-specialized researchers, neurologists and radiologists.
Parkinson's Disease (PD) is a common, chronically progressive neurological disorder, manifesting itself in highly incapacitating (sensori)motor, cognitive and autonomic disturbances. At the Neuroscience Campus Amsterdam there is a strong history in research on Parkinson's Disease.
