Master of Neurosciences
As of 2002 we organize a two year Research Master of Neuroscience Program. Students coming from various bachelor backgrounds from the international community enter the program. The ambition is clear: we train our future PhD-students.
In 2005 we founded a one year Exchange Honors Program for excellent students coming from our campus and those being selected in the Erasmus MC program. More recently, in 2008, also the Netherlands Institute for Neurosciences (NIN, KNAW) joined in offering this exchange master programme. The VU/VUmc also chairs the Graduate School Neuroscience Amsterdam-Rotterdam (ONWAR, dir Prof. Guus Smit) and in doing so, is taking the lead in organizing PhD-student training in the field of Neurosciences in Amsterdam (VU/VUmc, NIN and UVA/AMC) and Rotterdam (Erasmus MC).
Why Neurosciences?
The brain is the most complex organ in the human body. Recent, intensive scientific research has taught us an enormous amount about how it functions and what can go wrong. Each year over two million people suffer from a disease or condition that affects the brain. In the Master’s programme in Neurosciences you will help expand the horizons of our knowledge and develop strategies for treating and possibly even preventing these afflictions.
Your profile
Your goal is to understand the biological basis of how we perceive, act, learn, remember, think and experience emotion. Moreover, you wish to understand how a variety of neurological and psychiatric diseases disrupt the regulation of our mental processes. You can take:
- a molecular/cellular approach: you will analyse the nervous system in terms of its elementary components by examining molecules, cells or circuits in isolation.
- a network/system approach: you will focus on brain functions in intact animals and in conscious human beings exhibiting specific behaviours.
Our students have a genuine interest in the field of neurosciences. You must be highly motivated, keen to learn and hard-working. We expect active participation, a swift understanding of scientific texts (the vast majority of which are written in English), a critical disposition and a natural talent for giving presentations and writing reports.
