Courses for non-student visitors
Are you studying at another faculty or university and would you like to take a course at the Faculty of Earth and Life Sciences? Please register in the main building. You will need to submit the following documentation:
- A registration form. You may request a registration form from the reception desk in the main building or download one (see the link below).
- Written permission from your own faculty or university to take the course(s) at our faculty.
- A receipt for payment of the tuition fees (this is not a certificate of admission!)
You should register for the course at least four weeks before the starting date by sending an e-mail to the study secretary: (studiesecretariaat@falw.vu.nl). Late registration may result in exclusion from the course or extra administrative fees.
The student reception desk is located in the foyer of the VU main building at De Boelelaan 1105, location 0A-11.
Contract education
Coursework can be tailored to individual wishes by making use of contract education. Course contents are adjusted according to the specific wishes of the contracting company or organization. Courses can be given at the university, or at the client’s location (in-company courses).
Auditing a course
Would you like to take a course even though you lack the prerequisites? That can be arranged, but you will have no rights to a mark or a degree based on the coursework. Furthermore, you will have to pay a fee for each credit.

Admission
The faculty decides on admitting students for contract education or for course auditing purposes. Admission may be dependent on meeting prerequisites. If you wish to take or audit a course as part of contract education, please send a written request to the faculty secretary including the following information:
- name
- address
- telephone number
- the courses you wish to take
- prior education
- work-related experience

If you are sent a certificate of admission by the faculty, an invoice for the course fees will soon follow. Contract auditors may take a test following the course; if they pass they will receive a certificate stating this fact. Contract auditors may not take part in university exams. In other words: a degree programme cannot be completed by amassing certificates from contract education!
Fees
If you would like to audit a course at VU University Amsterdam on a contract basis, you will have to pay a fee:
- Auditing a lecture, including a final test: 200 euros per ECTS credit.
- Taking a combi-course (lecture plus lab practical or tutorial, including a final test: 300 euros per ECTS credit.
Course fees do not include costs for literature (books, syllabus, reader) or required materials for the any lab practicals or tutorials.
